Glossary of Common Terms

Below is a list of common terms used in the Naturist Lifestyle.

AANR The American Association for Nude Recreation (formally American Sunbathing Association) one of the two major American naturist associations (see also TNS).
The Bulletin Publication of the AANR.
Canuding Canoeing in the nude.
CO Clothing Optional.
FCN Federation of Canadian Naturists - Canadian naturist association which together with the FQN represents Canada in the INF.
Free Beach A beach which is used by naturists where nudity is at least tolerated by the authorities.  These beaches have often become free as a result of long term use even if no official designation has been made by the government.
INF The International Federation of Naturists - International naturist organization which brings together over 30 member countries' national organizations. Based in Belgium.
Going Natural Publication of the FCN.
Naturism Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature characterized by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging self-respect for others and for the environment.
Naturist One who practices Naturism (not to be confused with Naturalist).
Non-landed A type of club/group which does not have facilities of its own.  Instead, members either travel to existing naturist clubs/resort or rent facilities for naturist activities.
Nudism Older term for naturism used mostly in North America.
Nudist One who practices Nudism.
rec.nude USENET newsgroup on the internet whose subject is naturism.  While this was once the best resource of naturist information on the internet, it has fallen into disfavour due to misuse.
textile Reference to non-naturist world (ie: textile beach).
TNS The Naturist Society one of the two major American naturist associations
Top-free The preferred term for what is commonly referred to as topless.  Created as a result of the undesirable association between toplessness and strip bars.
